Work Started to Widen I-5 at Carman Drive
Project will mean four lanes southbound from Carman Drive to Lower Boones Ferry Road
Work got under way in January on an ODOT project to extend the fourth lane of southbound Interstate 5, which now tapers off just south of the Carman Drive off-ramp in Tigard.
The project will lengthen the lane through the Carman Drive interchange and connect it with the existing exit-only lane for Lower Boones Ferry Road. The Carman Drive/Upper Boones Ferry on‐ramp to I‐5 southbound will be shifted slightly to the east to better align with the new lane.
Once complete, I-5 will have four lanes southbound from Carman Drive to Lower Boones Ferry Road, a stretch that sees considerable congestion and weaving, especially during the afternoon commute. After completion, traffic should flow more smoothly with fewer rear-end crashes.
The project will not require daytime lane closures although some nighttime closures will take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Several closures of the Upper Boones Ferry Road/Carman Drive on‐ramp to I‐5 south may also be needed while the contractor works on the ramp realignment. These will take place mainly at night but one full weekend closure of the ramp may be required.
Construction should be completed by August 2012. The project cost is $1.2 million.
