New Multnomah County vehicle registration fee takes effect in January 2021
Nov. 2, 2020
Multnomah County residents whose vehicle registrations expire Jan. 1, 2021, and later will see a new fee when they renew their tags through DMV.
For registrations expiring in January 2021 and later, the Multnomah County registration fee will rise to $56 per year, or $112 every two years, for most types of vehicles.
The county fee for motorcycles and mopeds will increase to $39 per year, or $78 each two-year renewal. The county fee for for-rent trailers will increase to $30 per year, or $150 for a five-year registration.
Residents will start seeing the new fee in November when DMV begins mailing renewal reminders for registrations that expire in January. The new fee will apply even if you renew your tags before Jan. 1 because the cost is based on the vehicle’s expiration date, not when the fee is paid.
The county fee is in addition to the standard statewide registration renewal fee, which is based on your vehicle’s fuel economy rating and whether you participate in OReGO, the state’s pay-per-mile program – visit MyOReGO.org for details. If you order new or replacement license plates or transfer your title, there are additional fees for those.
Multnomah County established a local registration fee in 2009 at $19 per year, or $38 at each two-year renewal, to help pay for replacement of the Sellwood Bridge. In December 2019, the county passed an ordinance for the January 2021 fee increase to help pay for replacement or retrofitting of the Burnside Bridge.
