I-5 Interstate Bridge Trunnion Replacement
|

|
|
Sept. 27, 2020
The northbound span of the Interstate Bridge re-opened late Friday but occasional southbound lane closures will continue in the weeks ahead as the project enters its final phase.
The most disruptive part of the project involved closing the northbound span to replace aging parts in the lift mechanism. But work continues.
- The left lane of southbound I-5 near the bridge is closed around-the-clock for one week while crews reconnect the median barrier.
- Beginning Monday, Sept. 28 and continuing through Friday, Oct. 2, southbound travel across the bridge will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., while crews remove portions of the zipper barrier.
- Intermittent short-term nighttime bridge closures will also be needed while crews remove falsework, beginning Monday and continuing until complete.
- The sidewalk on the northbound span will remain closed through Sunday, Oct. 4. Bike and pedestrian travelers crossing the bridge in both directions will share the sidewalk on the southbound span.

About the project
The 103-year-old northbound span closed while crews replaced mechanical parts that help lift and lower the bridge. The Interstate Bridge carries I-5 across the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington.
About the bridge
The Interstate Bridge is jointly owned by Oregon and Washington and is maintained and operated by ODOT. The two states are sharing the $13 million cost of this project. The northbound span opened in 1917 and the southbound span in 1958.
