I-5 Interstate Bridge Trunnion Replacement

Sept. 25, 2020
One lane of I-5 south is now closed for a week at the Interstate Bridge
ODOT re-opened one lane of the northbound span of the Interstate Bridge late Friday after a week-long closure to replace aging parts in the lift mechanism.
Full re-opening of all three lanes of the northbound span will take place over the next several hours. Crews over the next several hours will also re-open the four nearby Interstate 5 ramps which have been closed since Sunday and the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Vancouver City Center.
The project isn’t finished yet. As we transition out of the northbound span closure, here’s what to expect:
- Re-opening the northbound span means the left lane of I-5 south at the Interstate Bridge is closed around-the-clock for one week so crews can reconnect the median barrier and wrap up the project. Continue to expect delays and plan your travel strategy accordingly.
- The sidewalk on the northbound span may remain closed until Sunday, Oct. 4. Bike and pedestrian travelers crossing the bridge in both directions will share the sidewalk on the southbound span.
- Travelers should expect occasional night lane closures on I-5, up to 30-minute bridge lifts on the northbound span and nighttime ramp closures between Marine Drive in Portland and SR 14 in Vancouver as work winds down.
- While the northbound span is opening to vehicle traffic, the lift span remains temporarily closed to river traffic. Click here for more details about marine traffic.
"We owe a big thanks to the traveling public for their patience, understanding and willingness to modify their travel habits during this closure of the northbound span,” said Rian Windsheimer, ODOT regional manager for the Portland area. “While the most impactful phase is now behind us, we’re not done yet. You’re going to see further lane closures and bridge lifts in the coming weeks as we complete work on both spans.”

About the bridge
The Interstate Bridge is jointly owned by Oregon and Washington and is maintained and operated by ODOT. The two states are sharing the $13 million cost of this project. The northbound span opened in 1917 and the southbound span in 1958.
