I-5 Interstate Bridge Trunnion Replacement
9-day Closure of the Interstate Bridge September 12–20, 2020
|
Bridge Lifts on I-5 North Tonight and Tomorrow Night
Crews are preparing for the closure of the northbound span of the I-5 Interstate Bridge September 12–20, when they will replace mechanical parts that help lift and lower the bridge.
Bridge lifts will occur tonight and tomorrow night, Sept. 8 and 9, on I-5 north for crews to finish the support system under the bridge's lift span counterweights, which weigh 760 tons each. Expect traffic stops and delays traveling north into Washington.

Weekly Traffic Impacts Tuesday, Sept. 8 - Thursday, Sept. 10
- Nighttime traffic stops on I-5 northbound for up to 30 minute bridge lifts Tuesday night, Sept. 8 and Wednesday night, Sept. 9 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Expect delays traveling north into Washington.
- Nighttime single lane closures on I-205 in both directions in Oregon and Washington at the Glenn Jackson Bridge from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday night, Sept. 8.
- Intermittent closures of the northbound sidewalk on the Interstate Bridge. Bikes and pedestrians should follow the signed detour to use the sidewalk on the southbound structure.
Remember to drive safe and avoid work zone crashes by slowing down, paying attention, and following signs and flaggers.
Travel Strategies
With the northbound span of the Interstate Bridge closed, heavy traffic, congestion and long delays are expected in the region on I-5, I-205, I-84, SR 14 and local streets in north Portland and south Vancouver during construction.
Everyone can help reduce congestion during the closure by using options such as delaying or shifting trips, biking, taking transit, or working from home or another location if possible.

About the project
The northbound span of the Interstate Bridge closes September 12–20 as crews replace mechanical parts that help lift and lower the bridge. The Interstate Bridge is located on I-5 where it connects Oregon and Washington across the Columbia River.
The bridge closure is scheduled for September in part due to the low river levels, which allow most vessels to travel under the Interstate Bridge without a bridge lift. This is essential for marine traffic because the Columbia River is an international shipping channel.
