Full Closure on I-5 Including On- and Off- Ramps

Interstate 5 will close overnight on Saturday, May 16 in both directions between State Route 14 (Exit 1A) in Washington and N Alberta Street/Swan Island (Exit 303).

The closure is scheduled from 11 p.m. Saturday, May 16 to 6 a.m. Sunday, May 17.

See maps below for closure areas and detour routes.

Overnight Closure Travel Impacts

In order to maintain a safe work zone while construction crews operate large cranes to install two new sign bridges on I-5 at the same time, I-5 will close overnight between SR-14 (Exit 1A) in Washington and N Alberta Street (Exit 303).   The new sign bridges will span the full width of the freeway, across all lanes in both directions.

Travelers should expect the following traffic impacts:

  • In the work area, travel lanes and entrance and exit ramps on I-5 will close.
  • Only one lane on the bottom deck of the Fremont Bridge (I-405) will
remain open to access southbound I-5.
  • I-405 northbound off-ramp to N Kerby Avenue will close, with access for emergency vehicles only.

Lane closures begin at 7 p.m. so crews can set up for the full closure.

Project Overview

We are installing advisory speed signs and traveler information signs and relocating green guide signs in seven locations along I-5 between I-405 and N Marine Drive in North Portland. These signs will help reduce crashes, improve travel time reliability and enhance transit operations by providing real-time traffic information.

Noise impacts During Construction

Daytime and nighttime construction noise will occur periodically from heavy
equipment, construction trucks, vehicle back-up alarms (a requirement by the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration), drilling and other equipment such
as compressors, pneumatic tools, and potentially nighttime flagging with generators.
Those working or living in the area may be affected. ODOT will apply construction
noise mitigation measures to reduce noise impacts to surrounding neighbors.

Please visit www.tinyurl.com/ODOTRealTime for the current closure information during construction or visit TripCheck.com for 24/7 traffic impacts in the Portland metro region.

Construction will take place mostly at night to minimize traffic impacts during the day. Use the 24/7 nighttime noise hotline to reach a live person to discuss any noise concerns: 971-673-5239.
