WHY IS MAINTENANCE NEEDED ON THESE RAMPS?
The on-ramp bridges need to be reinforced where the beams connect to meet current requirements. This work will maintain the on-ramps’ long-term safety so they can continue serving thousands of travelers a day. Reinforcing the beam connections will increase the weight capacity of the bridges, which are vital components of these on-ramps.
This spring, we will begin maintenance on the SW Terwilliger Boulevard and SW Bertha Boulevard on-ramps to I-5 north. We are improving the weight capacity of the bridges by reinforcing beam connections. This will maintain the long-term safety and use of these heavily traveled on-ramps.
Work will include drilling and installing steel rods. Work is expected to be complete in summer of 2020, but is subject to change based on weather or unexpected site conditions.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS
The SW Terwilliger Boulevard and SW Bertha Boulevard on-ramps to I-5 north will close intermittently for up to one month each. The ramp closures are needed to maintain a safe work zone for travelers and construction crews. Traffic delays are expected. Intermittent single lane closures will occur on SW Barbur Boulevard and intermittent nighttime single lane closures will occur on SW Terwilliger Boulevard.
- Ramp closures may occur at all hours except from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. weekdays.
- Only one on-ramp will close at a time.
- Signed detours will be in place.
TRAIL IMPACTS
To maintain safety to trail users, a short section of SW Trail 4 will close underneath the SW Terwilliger Boulevard and SW Bertha Boulevard on-ramps throughout construction.
- A signed detour will be in place on the trail to allow walkers to continue trail use.
- The trail detour is expected to last through summer 2020.

People in the vicinity of SW Trail 4 may see a temporary work platform and equipment beneath the on-ramps before and during construction. Construction may not always be visible at street level.
