Closure delayed: Troutdale Bridge over the Sandy River

Full closure of the Troutdale Bridge to motor vehicles postponed to March 16

The eight-week closure for motor vehicles using the Troutdale Bridge across the Sandy River has been postponed one week due to the availability of materials. Crews will begin replacing the aging wooden walkway to improve safety and accessibility for users on March 16.

Motor vehicles can follow detour routes. People walking, biking or rolling can continue using the bridge during construction, but should follow the signed and accessible detour route onto the bridge and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

In addition, the week of March 9-13, travelers should expect flaggers directing traffic between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays over the bridge.

About the project

We will replace the wooden walkway with synthetic lumber, which has a longer lifespan, reduced maintenance needs and similar appearance to wood. We will also widen it to better serve users, including those with disabilities.

Other project elements include:

  • Repairs to small sections of the steel bridge.
  • Replacing the aging wooden guardrail with metal guardrail designed to resemble the original.
  • Replacing the lighting on the bridge to increase visibility and safety.
  • Making minor traffic control changes at the intersection on the northeast end of the bridge.

Schedule

Construction began in February 2020 and is scheduled to be complete before Memorial Day (May 25) and the height of summer recreation. Schedule is subject to change and work is weather dependent.

Construction impacts

  • For up to eight weeks during construction, the bridge will be closed to all motor vehicles. Signed detours will direct travelers around the closure.
  • Travelers can also expect flaggers to direct traffic at other times during construction.
  • People walking, biking or rolling can continue using the bridge during construction, but should follow the signed and accessible detour route onto the bridge and use caution when traveling through the work zone.
  • Most of the work will take place during the day, but some work may take place at night and those working or living in the area may hear the noise. A 24/7 noise hotline is available for noise questions or complaints at: 503-276-7803.
  • Business and recreational access will remain open during work.
