Oregon chain law requires all vehicles to carry or use chains in snow zones posted by signs under Oregon Administrative Rule 734 Division 17.
Failure to follow chain laws can not only result in a citation but also crashes, injuries, and major delays for both motor carriers and the traveling public.
As you know, the days around Thanksgiving are among the busiest times of year for highway passenger travel.
Motor Carrier Enforcement Officers wrote a total of 63 citations Tuesday for failure to carry chains:
- Ashland southbound – 25
- Booth Ranch southbound – 28
- Farewell Bend – 10 for failure to carry and 10 for failure to use
Motor carriers heading east on Highway 22 toward the Santiam Pass on Tuesday showed a much higher compliance rate. Out of 74 trucks checked during the day, all but one were carrying the required number of chains.

- Carry chains and know how to use them.
