SALEM - The Cascades POINT bus service, operating between Eugene and Portland, will return to its normal daily schedule now that paving is finished on I-5 in the Willamette Valley. The schedule change will be effective Oct. 28. Pick-up and drop-off times were changed in June in order to accommodate delays from work zone congestion. Riders will now see faster connections with the regular schedule reinstated.
“We want to thank our riders for their patience during the busy summer construction season,” said Joel Manning, POINT project manager. “I think everyone is relieved to finally be getting back to our regular schedule. Most importantly, we’re thankful for a safe and smooth new road.”
Over 6,000 riders use the Cascades POINT route each month, which operates six daily trips in each direction with stops at each Amtrak Station between Portland and Eugene plus the Woodburn Memorial Transit Facility and Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. The route is coordinated with the Amtrak Cascades train service, connecting 18 cities in the Pacific Northwest along a 467-mile route from Eugene to Vancouver, B.C. The POINT bus is open to the general public and you need not be a train passenger to ride.
The POINT’s Cascades route has the highest ridership of the state’s four routes (SouthWest, Klamath Falls – Brookings; NorthWest, Portland – Astoria; Eastern, Bend – Ontario; and Cascades). On the Cascades route, about one-third of riders are using the bus to connect to/from Amtrak Cascades train service.
Initiated in October 1994, the Portland-Eugene bus service is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month. See the schedule and learn more about these routes and connections on the newly redesigned website, https://www.oregon-point.com/.
