Two I-5 ramps closing Oct. 18-21 for bridge joint work

The closures are part of ODOT's bridge joint replacement project to repair aging freeway ramps along I-405

PORTLAND – Two freeway ramps along I-5 near downtown Portland will be closed the weekend of Oct. 18-21 for bridge joint replacements, including the Friday evening and Monday morning commutes.

The work is part of a project to repair aging freeway ramps on both sides of the Fremont Bridge, improving their condition and maintaining their safety for decades to come.

These are not the only closures coming this month to this part of the freeway system.  On Friday, Oct. 25 the ramp from eastbound U.S. 30 to southbound Interstate 405 will be closed for 11 days. The Fremont Bridge will remain open during the 11-day closure, with access available by other ramps.

This weekend, ramps will be closed from 11 a.m. Friday. Oct. 18 to 10 a.m. Monday Oct. 21.

The ramps are:

  • The ramp from southbound I-5 to southbound I-405, on the east end of the Fremont Bridge. Average daily traffic on this ramp was 39,980 in 2017.
  • The North Going Street on-ramp to southbound I-5. Average daily traffic on this ramp was 7,090 in 2017.

I-5 south will remain open, but travelers should expect delays, especially during commute hours, with increased traffic using I-5 south as a detour.

During the closure, traffic can still reach I-405 southbound and the Fremont Bridge on the two remaining bridge on-ramps: from northbound I-5 and from North Kerby Avenue.

I-5 south to I-405 south ramp and Going Street on-ramp to I-5 south closed

Detours

  • When the ramp to southbound I-405 is closed, traffic can continue south on I-5 across the Marquam Bridge to northbound I-405 and continue north to U.S. 26 or I-405.
  • When the North Going Street on-ramp is closed, traffic can take the Going Street ramp onto northbound I-5 to the next exit, Rosa Parks Way, and turn left to take the ramp to southbound I-5.

Drivers should plan ahead, know their alternate routes and check TripCheck.com
