Expect Graham Road Closures in October; Project is Nearly Halfway Complete

Crews demolished the westbound I-84 bridge in May

Upcoming traffic shift and road closures

The new westbound I-84 bridge over Graham Road is now complete and eastbound I-84 traffic is scheduled to switch onto the adjacent temporary bridge the week of October 7,  as weather allows. Expect nighttime I-84 eastbound closures with traffic using the Frontage Road during this work.

Work to demolish the old eastbound bridge is expected to take place the weekend of October 11.

In order to demolish the eastbound I-84 bridge, a full weekend closure of Graham Road may be required from 9 p.m. Friday, October 11 through 5 a.m. Monday, October 14. If demolition cannot be fully completed due to weather, additional closures may be required the following weekend (October 18-21).

While Graham Road is closed, northbound traffic will detour at Halsey Street to NE 238th Drive. Pedestrians will be directed to use Harlow Road.

Businesses are open

Local access to businesses on the Columbia River Highway and at the Columbia Gorge Outlets will remain open for northbound travelers on Graham Road. To access businesses on the north side of I-84 or west side of Graham Road, follow detour signs.

Westbound paving.

Project nearly halfway complete

With I-84 traffic now traveling across the new westbound bridge, the project is nearly halfway complete. The opening marks the conclusion of four months of intensive work to demolish the old structure and build a new bridge over Graham Road. Once the remaining eastbound bridge is demolished, work will shift to building the eastbound structure.

Crews will also widen Graham Road under the bridges to accommodate the new vehicle lane, sidewalk and bike lane. Construction remains on schedule, and the contractor will work through the winter to be able to finish the project by winter 2020.

About the Project

The existing I-84 bridges over Graham Road are aging and the bridge surfaces are deteriorating. Where Graham Road passes under I-84 there are narrow shoulders, no sidewalks, and the vertical clearance is too short to safely accommodate large vehicles. Also, the two existing lanes under the bridges do not accommodate increased northbound traffic volumes caused by new development north of I-84.

This project will replace the I-84 bridges, widen Graham Road to three lanes, provide more vertical clearance for trucks, and improve walking and biking access under the bridges by adding a new sidewalk and bike lane.

Construction will continue through winter 2020.
