JOHN DAY, Ore. – On Wednesday a highway construction flagger working along U.S. 26 in Mt. Vernon was struck and injured by a motorist. Please remember that construction work is still going on along eastern Oregon highways and that right now someone’s father, mother, wife, husband, grandparent or good friend is at risk. When you see orange signs, slow down and be prepared to stop.

The bridge project in Mt. Vernon will continue for another few weeks, while over a dozen other projects throughout eastern Oregon also remain active. The mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, grandparents and friends on these projects are all working to help keep you safe as they repair roadways, bridges and culverts, replace guardrail, realign dangerous curves, and perform a host of other activities. Highway construction work is a dangerous job, but you can make it safer for yourself and work crews by taking a personal pledge to pay extra attention near work zones. It’s easy: just clear your mind of distractions and refocus your attention on driving.  We greatly appreciate it.
