KLAMATH FALLS –  During the evening hours of Tuesday, June 18, 2019, a flagger, Daniel Wessel of Rocky Mountain Construction, was providing traffic control for an ODOT work zone on OR 140E near Klamath Falls when he was struck and killed by a motor vehicle.

Upon hearing of the incident, ODOT Director Matt Garrett commented that, “One injury or fatality among our staff and contractors is one too many,” adding, “Our hearts, minds, prayers and thoughts go out to this family of our fallen comrade. We will, we must do better at protecting those who put their lives on the line to enhance and maintain our vital transportation system.”

The preliminary investigation by the Oregon State Police revealed that a car, operated by Zahara Gonzales of Klamath Falls, was traveling westbound on Hwy 140E, entered an active construction zone and struck Mr. Wessel, also of Klamath Falls.  Mr. Wessel was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation into this accident is continuing.
