February 2019 Engineering Careers Spotlight: Culverts

Our Culvert Engineering Program, as part of our Hydraulic Engineering Program, provides technical support and guidance in the field of culvert design, trenchless repair technologies and fish passage design. The program administers the Culvert Funding Program, Major Culvert Maintenance Funding Program, and the Statewide Culvert Inspection Program.

We are engaged in a comprehensive culvert inventory and inspection effort to accurately evaluate the condition of culverts along the state’s highway system. Completing this initial effort provides two key benefits for ODOT. First, the completed inventory and inspections will support and shape Oregon’s climate resiliency plan. Secondly, the information will provide decision makers with a set of tools to effectively manage dedicated funding and planning.  Both of these benefits will support the agency’s goal to provide a safe and reliable transportation system throughout Oregon.

We're passionate about our projects

Our inspection teams frequently travel and explore the beautiful landscapes of Oregon. We have discovered culverts constructed of stacked stone, wood staves, and of course, metal and concrete. The collected data and information directly supports:

  • Culvert funding programs.
  • Project delivery.
  • ODOT Maintenance.
  • Culvert rehabilitation and renewal options.

We are located in Oregon's capital city: Salem, Oregon

  • The ODOT Hydraulic Engineering program operates within the Technical Services and Engineering Branch. The program provides statewide technical expertise, project design support and training in the field of hydrology and hydraulics. The hydraulic program is comprised of four disciplines that include Culvert Engineering, Stormwater Engineering, Bridge Hydraulic Engineering and Stream Engineering.
