I-205 construction continues in 2019

Paving and auxiliary lane projects will mean some lane and ramp closures through the year

Feb. 11, 2019

Two projects to improve safety and operations are under construction on Interstate I-205 between OR 224 in Clackamas and the Glenn Jackson Bridge. Travelers should expect nightly lane and ramp closures and periodic full closures of I-205 at night during construction.

I-205 Paving and Auxiliary Lanes between Johnson Creek Boulevard and the Glenn Jackson Bridge.

A project to repave I-205 between Johnson Creek Boulevard and the Glenn Jackson Bridge and to construct three new auxiliary lanes is entering its second season.

In 2018, significant work was completed including paving much of I-205 in the project area, ramps and intersections; completing a southbound auxiliary lane (from I-84 eastbound to the southbound Division/Powell on-ramp) and beginning work on a northbound auxiliary lane from (I-84 eastbound to the Killingsworth Street exit); improving the entrance to the multi-use path at Glisan Street; and improving sidewalk curb ramps within the project area.

Work continues throughout 2019, including finishing constructing the northbound auxiliary lane from I-84 eastbound to the Killingsworth Street exit, constructing a third auxiliary lane between Powell Boulevard and I-84 westbound and installing new electronic signs, called ODOT RealTime signs.

 Travelers should expect:

  • Periodic full closures of I-205 in both directions for sign bridge installation from Sunday through Thursday nights from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Up to several nights, full closure of the I-205 Glenn Jackson Bridge in both directions from Sunday through Thursday nights from midnight to 5 a.m. Travelers will not be able to travel between Portland and Vancouver at this location during the closure.
  • A 60-day 24/7 closure of the Division Street on-ramp to I-205 northbound for auxiliary lane construction in early spring 2019.
  • 24/7 weekend closure of I-205 northbound:
    • From Foster Road to the I-84 Interchange, all lanes on I-205 Northbound will close from 10 p.m. on Friday, August 2 to 5 a.m. on Monday, August 5.
  • Ramps and shoulder closures in both directions including:
    • Interstate 84 eastbound to I-205 southbound ramp closure.
    • I-205 northbound to I-84 westbound ramp closure.
    • I-205 northbound NE Airport Way exit closure.
  • Nightly lane closures in both directions.

I-205 Northbound Auxiliary Lane from OR 224 to Sunnyside Road/Sunnybrook Boulevard

ODOT is constructing a northbound auxiliary lane between the Oregon 224 (Sunrise Expressway) on-ramp and the Sunnyside Road/Sunnybrook Boulevard interchange exit ramp (exit 14). This project also paves I-205 northbound in the project area and installs two new sign structures. Work continues through late spring 2020.

Travelers should expect:

Nightly lane closures on northbound I-205.

Ramp closures at night, including:

  • OR 224/Sunrise Expressway on-ramp to northbound I-205.
  • I-205 northbound exit ramp to Sunnybrook Boulevard/Sunnyside Road.
  • Oregon 212 on-ramp to northbound I-205.
