EUGENE - A new traffic pattern is coming. Beginning Friday night, January 11, travelers will see the I-105 eastbound lane move to the far right of the roadway through the construction area. The traffic shift process will be done in stages over several nights. This work will be done at night to lessen traffic impact.
Tuesday, January 15, two westbound lanes will be available south of the Willamette River Bridge, adding an additional lane to make travel faster and easier by eliminating the need to merge at the southbound Delta Highway onramp. Road striping and moving concrete traffic barriers need to be done before traffic patterns change. Striping is weather dependent. Travelers should expect this new traffic configuration to remain for about six weeks as the second half of an obsolete bridge is removed.
I-105 may still be the best way to go
While many people change routes to avoid construction, travelers may find that I-105 could be the best way to get where they are going. Traffic moves smoothly through the construction area with very short delays most of the day, adding 5-10 minutes during peak travel times. Travelers can use Tripcheck.com to see traffic flow through the area, but it does not provide travel times.
Also on the project
Bridge removal is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 16. Demolition work will occur during the day. The second half of a bridge joint will be installed in the left lane of the Washington Street ramp, and preparations are being made on the ramp to replace the guardrail.
Background
The I-105 (Washington/Jefferson Street Bridge) bridge preservation project brings I-105 bridges and ramps between Delta Highway and downtown Eugene up to current standards. Lane closures and detours will be limited as much as possible, but are necessary. Travelers should visit TripCheck.com for information on lane closures and traffic changes when planning their routes.
The I-105 bridges were built in the late 1960s and early 1970s and need repair and upgrades. Work includes upgraded guardrails, deck paving, seismic retrofits, joint replacements, and other repairs. Work will occur day and night, with lane and ramp closures.
