Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act as the engineering geologist and professional of record for routine to complex transportation projects involving structures, high seismic risk zones, landslide stabilization, rockfall, embankments on weak compressible soils, and cut slopes.
  • Preparing engineering geology investigation plans and assist in developing staffing plans and schedules to match the project needs.
  • Identify and evaluate geologic hazards that affect public safety, and makes prudent recommendations.
  • Analyze the data from research and subsurface investigations with computer methods to predict behavior of geologic materials including the likelihood of landslide movements or settlement, and to evaluate geotechnical design alternatives for mitigation of identified problems.
  • Prepare or approve final stamped technical reports that include geologic conditions/hazards and design recommendations for use by civil and geotechnical engineers, construction staff and contractors.
  • Review the work of lower level engineering geologists, engineers, and technical staff and help provide training for quality control, completeness and conformance with applicable State and Federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Perform contract administration duties for general services contracts such as drilling and testing, or geophysical surveys.  Work includes solicitations, writing work orders, negotiating prices, and ensuring accurate invoicing and payments.
  • Develops plans and specifications for engineering geology, safety, and emergency projects.  
  • Participate and serve as a technical resource on technical advisory committees and project teams.
  • Providing documentation and testimony as a certified engineering geologist and represent the department's interests at public hearings.

 

Minimum Qualifications
You will need:

  • A certified engineering geologist (CEG) license from the Oregon State Board of Geologist Examiners.


Note: We will consider candidates with a CEG license from other states.  It will be your responsibility to contact the Oregon State Board of Geologist Examiners for information to become CEG licensed in Oregon within 6 months of hire as a condition of employment.

Special Qualifications

  • Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license, an acceptable driving record and the ability to drive are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

  • Experience with engineering geology investigations and design.
  • Knowledge of engineering geology principles related to transportation, facilities, or other projects.
  • Knowledge of 3-D CAD software and experience modeling geologic conditions and design alternatives.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite programs, and analytical programs for geotechnical analysis.
  • Experience responding to emergencies related to geologic hazards.
  • Experience working on project teams.
  • Knowledge of software for monitoring instruments like inclinometers and piezometers.


Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in the office with extensive use of a computer and various software programs.  Field work is comprised about 50% of your time. 
  • Frequent overnight travel in the region and statewide. 
  • Fieldwork requires exposure to frequent encounters with rough terrain, inclement weather, falling rocks, landslides, steep slopes, heights, poison oak exposure, construction sites, work around heavy drilling equipment, work in roadways with heavy traffic volumes, geologic hazard emergency situations, media, rock blasting, and hazardous materials.
  • Overtime and occasional long hours, night or weekend work may be required.
