Your update on the ongoing I-5/I-84 interchange ramp work

Thank you, travelers, for your understanding and patience as we work through the #BanfieldBackup and #BigFixPDX! An unanticipated complication will delay the re-opening of a I-84/I-5 interchange ramp.

Updated closure

The ramp from Interstate 84 westbound to Interstate 5 southbound will re-open on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The scheduled re-opening date was Monday, Aug. 27.

Hamilton Construction and ODOT crews found the metal rebar, part of the ramp structure, severly damaged and in need of replacement in places under the existing concrete. The damage could not be seen until the concrete was removed. Both the metal rebar and the concrete have been in place since the ramps opened in the early 1960’s.

The re-opening is weather dependent and extensive rain could create another delay. The concrete requires three days to cure sufficiently before traffic can return to the ramp.

All on-ramps onto I-84 westbound between I-205 and I-5 will remain closed. These on-ramp closures include:

  • NE Halsey St.
  • NE Sandy Blvd.
  • NE 58th / NE Glisan St.
  • NE 33rd Ave.

All off-ramps exiting I-84 between I-205 and I-5 will remain open.

The rebar was severely damaged, causing a repair delay.
Crews discovered the damage after uncovering the rebar.
