PORTLAND – Two critical freeway closures that start this week in Portland will mean congestion and delays for motorists who don’t plan ahead.

The closures are part of separate projects that will help maintain the life of the regional transportation system.

Visit BigFixPDX.com for summer highway closure information in the Portland area and to help plan ways around the expected congestion.

Here is a look at the closures.

Westbound I-84 ramp to northbound I-5 closes for 12 days

The ramp will close from 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 25 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6. Starting 5 a.m. Friday, July 27, only the left lane of I-84 westbound will remain open at the I-5 interchange with all traffic exiting to southbound I-5.

This second of three summer ramp closures could create the most congestion. During the I-84 westbound to I-5 northbound closures, it could take up to three hours to travel between I-205 and I-5 along I-84. Congestion is expected on local roads as people bypass the interstate.

The third summer ramp closure begins 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 when the westbound I-84 ramp to southbound I-5 will close. The ramp will re-open by 5 a.m. Monday Aug. 27.

Northbound I-5 closes at I-84 for the next two weekends

Northbound I-5 will be closed at I-84 Friday night through Monday morning over the next two weekends as part of the I-5 paving project.

During the closure, all northbound traffic over the Marquam Bridge will exit the freeway at I-84. Through I-5 northbound traffic should take Interstate 405 over the Fremont Bridge back to I-5.

The closures will be in place from:

  • 10 p.m. Friday, July 27 until 5 a.m. Monday, July 30.
  • 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6.

When the northbound lanes are closed, traffic will be directed north onto Interstate 405 just before the Marquam Bridge and then will travel over the Fremont Bridge to reconnect with I-5.

Four on-ramps to northbound I-5 will be closed at the same time:

  • The westbound Morrison Bridge on-ramp.
  • The eastbound Morrison Bridge on-ramp.
  • The North Williams Avenue on-ramp, near North Broadway.
  • The Southwest 5th Avenue on-ramp to I-405.

This paving work is taking place concurrently with the closure of the westbound Interstate 84 ramp to northbound I-5, which will re-open at 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6. Doing this work simultaneously limits the number of full ramp closures to I-84 that travelers would experience otherwise.
