The closure of the ramp from I-5 SB to I-84 EB is scheduled
to wrap up after this weekend, but another big closure (#BanfieldBackup) starts
next week as we continue work to maintain the busiest interchange in the state as part of #BigFixPDX.
Modeling shows traffic from the closure may back up as far east as Troutdale. Weekend
closures on I-5 in Portland continue in July and August as well. See the list of
current and upcoming closures for details.
Our
top I-5 and I-84 construction travel tips
We’ve heard from you and want to share our top travel tips
for the rest of July and August:
- Closures on I-5 and the I-5 at I-84 interchange
could affect your trip even if you’re not travelling on I-5 or I-84 through the
Portland metro area. Detour routes may be congested as travelers avoid
construction areas.
- Plan your trip on TriMet. The MAX Blue Line is a
great, traffic free alternative to I-84 for those traveling into Portland.
- Consider telecommuting or working from an
alternate location if you’re able. If you can, consider making your trip by bike
or foot.
We know not everyone can avoid driving. If you must
use a car:
- Visit TripCheck.com before you go for real time
traffic information.
- Fuel your vehicle and make sure you and your
passengers have water to stay hydrated.
- Be patient and drive safely. We’re all in this
together!

and upcoming closures
Now through 5 a.m. Monday,
July 23: The ramp from I-5 southbound
to I-84 eastbound will be closed.
10 p.m. Friday, July
20 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 23: I-5 southbound
will close between the Marquam and Fremont Bridges.
10 p.m. Wednesday,
July 25 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6: I-84 westbound
to I-5 northbound will be closed. In addition, all on-ramps to I-84 westbound between I-205 and I-5 will be closed. Off-ramps exiting I-84 westbound will remain open. I-205 will remain open. #BanfieldBackup
10 p.m. Friday, July 27
to 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2: In addition to
the I-84 westbound to I-5 northbound ramp closure, the center lane of I-84
westbound will close near Lloyd Boulevard. Only the left lane on I-84 westbound
(connecting to I-5 southbound) will remain open.
10 p.m. Friday, July
27 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 30: I-5 northbound
will close between the Marquam and Fremont Bridges.
10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3
to 5 a.m. Aug. 6: I-5 northbound will close between the Marquam
and Fremont Bridges.
10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27: I-84 westbound to I-5 southbound will close. Only one lane of I-84
will remain open, connecting to I-5 northbound. In addition, all on-ramps to I-84 westbound between I-205 and I-5 will be closed. Off-ramps exiting I-84 westbound will remain open. I-205 will remain open. #BanfieldBackup
