UPDATE: New trucking route to bypass I-84 closure in the Columbia River Gorge

THE DALLES – A new trucking detour has been established to help motor carriers bypass the section of Interstate 84 closed in the Columbia River Gorge because of the Eagle Creek Fire.

  • The new detour for westbound motor carriers has trucks using U.S. 197 from The Dalles south to OR 216 to U.S. 26 west back to I-84.
  • The new detour for eastbound motor carriers is the reverse: U.S. 26 east to OR 216, to U.S. 197 north to I-84 at The Dalles.

Oversize loads using detour routes should check for size and weight limits on their Oregon Permit Route Maps and Attachments, or by calling the Over-Dimension Permit Unit at 503-373-0000.

Message boards are being deployed to help guide motor carriers around the closure.

There is no change for passenger vehicles. I-84 remains closed in both directions between exit 17 in Troutdale and exit 62 at Hood River.

The closure will stay in place until ODOT, the U.S. Forest Service, law enforcement and firefighting officials determine that the road is again safe.

In Washington, all vehicles over 10,000 GVW are prohibited on eastbound SR 14 between Washougal (milepost 19) and U.S. 197 in Dallesport (milepost 84). Freight haulers should plan an alternate route. There is no estimate for lifting the restrictions.
