Oregon 66 ‘Crack of Doom’ fixed
Greensprings Highway reopens to two way traffic
ASHLAND — Oregon 66 reopened to traffic east of Ashland late this afternoon after nearly a month long closure to fix a decades old slide at milepost 12.
“All lanes are open now – and not just the single lane we’d hoped for,” said ODOT District Manager Jerry Marmon. “Our contractor moved quickly to repair and pave the road for a two lane opening prior to Labor Day Weekend.”
ODOT’s contractor closed the road August 3 for a full excavation of the highway, about 350 feet in length and about 15-20 feet deep.
The $700,000 slide repair was planned for summer 2018 but a wet spring and ongoing pavement repairs led to concerns the roadway might collapse, pushing it into an urgent repair.
Traffic was detoured during the closure using Dead Indian Memorial Road. That detour is now lifted.
“With the repairs earlier this year, and the month long closure for the project, we appreciate the patience of the Greensprings Community and those living on nearby Tyler Creek Road,” said Marmon.
