Old Youngs Bay Bridge will close overnight Tuesday 7/11 and perhaps overnight Wednesday 7/12

 

Replacing the bridge joints means up to two nights of detour using U.S. 101

 

An ODOT contractor will close the Old Youngs Bay Bridge overnight from 8 p.m. Tuesday July 11 until 6 a.m. the following morning to replace bridge joints. The contractor expects to finish in one night, but if more time is needed, the bridge will close overnight again Wednesday July 12, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning.

 

Travelers will see signs directing them to the detour along U.S. 101.

 

The work is part of a ​three-year, $16.7 million project to repair the historic Lewis & Clark River and Old Youngs Bay Bridges on U.S. 101B (Warrenton-Astoria Highway), now in the final year of work.

 

The contractor, Oregon Bridge Construction of Stayton, has repaired both bridges, replaced the west approach to the Lewis & Clark River Bridge, repaired and coated structural steel on lift spans and replaced the 90-plus year old electrical and mechanical systems of the Old Youngs Bay Bridge.

 

The Lewis & Clark River Bridge was built in 1924 and is the only remaining single-leaf bascule draw span in Oregon. The Old Youngs Bay Bridge was built in 1921 and is one of four remaining double-leaf bascule bridges in Oregon. A bascule style bridge is a drawbridge that uses a counter weight that balances the span throughout the entire upswing in providing clearance for boat traffic.
