Application of a new membrane then paving and joint repairs next for Center Street Bridge

SALEM—Repair work on Salem’s Center Street Bridge, the OR 22 bridge that carries eastbound traffic into Salem from Polk County, is about to pick up again with the contractor applying a new waterproof membrane and then paving on the deck in the coming weeks.

In the next few nights, the contractor will begin applying the new waterproof membrane before paving begins. Much of the grinding of the deck has been completed and the old membrane removed. Once the paving is completed, then the bridge joints will be replaced.

Conditions on the bridge will remain rough and bumpy until the contractor can fix the bridge joints and repave the bridge deck. Travelers are urged to slow down on the bridge especially in areas where the bridge joints are creating a significant bump.

The $2.5 million project will repair the existing bridge joints that are damaged and have resulted in a rough ride. In addition, pavement on the bridge is in poor condition and the project will grind and repave the bridge deck. .

Travelers can continue to expect work on the bridge Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. No work is scheduled on Friday and Saturday evenings. There could be multiple lanes closed at any one time during the evening. During the evening, travelers should leave extra time for eastbound travel on OR 22 in to Salem, and expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

The project is on schedule to be completed by August 15 prior to the Solar Eclipse event on August 21 and start of the State Fair on August 25.
