Workers hit in Oregon work zones will speak at work zone safety awareness press conference in Portland area
When: 10 a.m. Tuesday May 2, 2017
Why: To draw attention to the serious issue of distracted driving and speeding in Oregon work zones.
-
On average, a crash happens in an Oregon work zone every 18 hours.
-
Inattention, speed and driving too fast for conditions are the main contributing factors.
Where: ODOT construction site just off I-205 southbound, milepost 6.5

Stay in the right lane of I-205 southbound; about half a mile before the 10th St/West Linn exit (milepost 6), you’ll see a wide pull-out area on your right. Pull over into that area to slow down; continue to the far end of the area, to see the road to your right with a gate. Drive up the hill through the gate, turn left and park near the big pile.

Who: Representatives from ODOT and the highway construction industry will speak briefly. Private contractor construction workers and ODOT maintenance workers who have been hit in work zones will be available for 1-on-1 interviews.
The Oregon Columbia Chapter of Associated General Contractors, the Oregon Trucking Associations, AAA Oregon-Idaho, the Oregon State Police and ODOT collaborate to increase safety in work zones. Each organization will have representatives available to explain their important role.
What else: OSP will provide media work zone ride-alongs the night before and after the press conference.
Three bridges will turn orange for part of May to help raise awareness that “Orange is your clue” to slow down and pay attention in work zones. The Union Street Railroad Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge in Salem (https://www.google.com/maps/@44.9467318,-123.0429898,17z), the I-5 interchange in Woodburn (exit 271) and the Morrison Street Bridge in Portland will help commemorate May as Oregon’s Transportation Safety Awareness month.
