Doors, brackets and other pieces come back to life
The doors at the historic Salem Railroad Baggage Depot are being restored by Barnwood Naturals. Above, ODOT Senior Historian Chris Bell (left) discusses the details with Bruce Wadleigh from Barnwood.
When these brackets (below) were first removed for restoration, we discovered they were made of redwood. Oculus Fine Carpentry removed multiple layers of paint and rehabilitated as many as possible for re-use.

What's new
The new year found ODOT and our partners working fast and furious to complete the rehabilitation of the historic Salem Railroad Baggage Depot - and the building is complete!
The grounds work has been suspended until further funding is approved, most likely later this year. At that time, we'll finish up with sidewalks, asphalt and concrete driveways.
History is complex
ODOT State Rail Planner Bob Melbo has been doing his homework... He took on the task of researching what really happened at the turn of the 20th century with Salem's railroad station, and it was fascinating and complex. He compiled verbatim news stories and created a timeline, available on the project website.
