Culvert repair to close OR 99W between Rickreall and Amity for less than two weeks

Travelers to use local detour starting on Saturday

RICKREALL—A failing culvert about five miles north of Rickreall is forcing an emergency closure of OR 99W for less than two weeks starting Saturday (tomorrow) at 10 a.m. so a contractor working for the Oregon Department of Transportation can make the necessary repairs starting on Monday, April 10. Travelers will be able to use a local detour around the closure.

The detour route for traveling north and south on OR 99W is Perrydale Road (west of OR 99W) and Bethel Road. To help direct travelers around the closure, flaggers will be used as well as message boards and other signs. Travelers should add extra travel time and slow down while driving along the detour route.

The aging corrugated metal culvert at Ash Swale Creek was identified for replacement in 2020. However, the condition of the culvert deteriorated rapidly in the recent days and has failed. Recent maintenance efforts have not been able to slow the deterioration. By declaring an emergency, ODOT can hire a contractor immediately to make the larger repairs. A repair plan includes replacing the failing culvert starting on Monday. The work should be completed in less than two weeks.

Until the detour is in place, maintenance crews are monitoring the site to ensure it is safe for traffic. Variable message signs warn travelers about a dip in the road and portable lights have been set up to improve visibility at night.

A project has already been funded in the State Transportation Improvement Project (STIP) that would replace the culvert at this location with a bridge. That project is scheduled for construction in 2020. This project would also improve fish passage.
