Steel Bridge maintenance requires lower span closures to foot and river traffic

Closures start Monday, Jan. 9

Maintenance work by Union Pacific Railroad requires closures on the Steel Bridge for Willamette River users and people walking or biking across the lower deck.

Willamette River Users

The Steel Bridge across the Willamette River, river mile 12.1 in Portland, will not lift for maritime traffic from 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9 to 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18.

The U.S. Coast Guard granted the Oregon Department of Transportation a deviation from the Steel Bridge lift requirements to allow contractors to work on the railway on the lower deck of the bridge.

The Steel Bridge will resume normal lift operations on Thursday, Jan. 19.

 Lower Deck Users

Electrical maintenance will close the lower deck of the Steel Bridge from 12:01 a.m. Saturday Jan. 14 through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 18. People who bike or walk across the Steel Bridge can use the upper deck during this work.
