Work begins on third lane on U.S. 26
from 185th to Cornelius Pass Road
Construction just got under way on a two-year project adding a third lane to U.S. 26 between 185th Avenue and Cornelius Pass Road.
The project will make the Sunset Highway three lanes from the Vista Ridge Tunnel to Cornelius Pass Road. It’s designed to increase capacity, improve safety and relieve congestion in this busy corridor.
The public may meet with the project staff at an open house, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday Nov. 17 in the Liberty High School Rotunda, 21954 N.W. Wagon Way. The online open house with videos and other related materials and videos will be available through the project web site, www.cornpass185.org.
Major project elements include:
- Widening the highway in both directions. Most of the widening will take place on the inside of the highway, in the center median.
- Replacing the two Rock Creek bridges with one bridge over the Rock Creek Trail. During this phase of construction, the trail will be closed on two separate weekend and six separate nights.
- Improving the north side of the Cornelius Pass Road interchange by adding a second lane to the west loop off-ramp. Washington County is also making improvements along the south side of the interchange in an unrelated project.
- Building a noise wall on the north side of the Sunset Highway in the Rock Creek neighborhood, starting where the existing wall now leaves off. The work will take place off the highway and have no impact on traffic.
No daytime lane closures on U.S. 26 are planned but road users should expect night lane closures, ramp closures, reduced shoulders, traffic shifts and Cornelius Pass Road lane closures.
This stretch of highway has reached capacity. As Washington County’s population and employment grows, congestion and related crashes will increase in the area without improvements. This is a partnership project between ODOT, the City of Hillsboro and Washington County.
