Celebration set for opening of new bicycle and pedestrian bridge
EUGENE - Another vital connection for those who walk, bike and ride is complete, and now it’s time to celebrate. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and City of Eugene are holding a joint ceremony and ribbon cutting to mark the opening of the newest bicycle and pedestrian bridge adjacent to OR 99 in Eugene.
“This project was a tremendous opportunity to take bicyclists and pedestrians off the constrained Highway 99W bridge over the rail tracks,” said Sheila Lyons, ODOT’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Program Manager. “It provides a much safer and more comfortable connection for the neighborhoods in north Eugene to downtown.”
The event will be held on Friday, June 24, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Park at the Rexius lot on Highway 99, north of Garfield St.
As part of the celebration, the Eugene Police Crime Prevention Unit will be on hand to register bikes.
The project area is approximately one mile in length and extends from Roosevelt Boulevard on the north to Garfield Street on the southeast. The new bridge includes a 12-foot multi-use path from Roosevelt Boulevard to West 5th Avenue on the west side of Highway 99, and bike lanes for southbound bicycle traffic on West 7th Avenue. Sidewalks on the east side of West 7th Avenue complete the connection for people walking from Roosevelt Boulevard to the new EmX station being constructed on Garfield Street.
This project came in under budget at $4.9 million, funded from ODOT’s flexible funds and Sidewalk Improvement Program funds.
