Two Portland DMV office moves begin this week

Customers may wish to avoid longer than usual wait times during the moves

Two busy DMV offices in Portland are moving during mid-March after major renovations to the state-owned building at 8710 S.E. Powell Blvd.
If you need to do business in person at one of these offices in mid-March, you may wish to plan your visit before or after that time because wait times are likely to be longer than usual. You can check OregonDMV.com for live wait-times for DMV offices in the area and complete some DMV business online – such as renewing vehicle registration.
The March office moves will take place in two stages:
* The Mall 205 office will be closed for four days beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, so that its staff and equipment can move back to the newly expanded and renovated office at 8710 S.E. Powell Blvd. The S.E. Portland DMV office will reopen at the newly remodeled Powell Boulevard location at 8 a.m. Monday, March 14.
* The DMV office located at 1836 N.E. 82nd Ave. will close permanently at 5 p.m. Friday, March 11. The staff from that office will reopen at the Mall 205 location at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 16. DMV will then refer to this location as the Mall 205 office instead of the Northeast Portland office.
 “We are completing a long-needed renovation and expansion to the ODOT-owned DMV office on S.E. Powell,” DMV Administrator Tom McClellan said. “This is the first significant work done on the office since DMV moved into the property in the early 1980s.”
The year-long project included: Expanding the customer lobby space; redesigning the floorplan to gain more efficient use of space; replacing the roof; installing more energy-efficient elements to the interior and structure; and adding customer parking spaces.
The Northeast office had been in its 82nd Avenue location since 2002.
 “Rather than continue to use the leased location at N.E. 82nd, DMV decided to continue to lease the location in Mall 205,” McClellan said.
After the moves, both offices will retain their current business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Wednesdays when the offices open at 9 a.m.
Because the two office moves may sound confusing, here’s a simple way to look at the changes – by location:
* The office in Mall 205 will be closed for four days: Thursday and Friday, March 10-11, and Monday and Tuesday, March 14-15.
* The office at 8710 S.E. Powell Blvd. will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, March 14, after a year-long closure.
* The office at 1836 N.E. 82nd Ave. will close permanently at the end of the day, 5 p.m. Friday, March 11.
If you need to visit one of these offices in person, and the nearest is closed, you might consider using the office in Gresham, 1519 N.E. 181st Ave., or Gladstone, 10 82nd Drive.
