SE 82 Ave. safety project

starting construction this month

Construction is scheduled to begin in late February on a safety project on Southeast 82nd Avenue between East Burnside and Division Streets.

The project will improve safety and traffic flow for all highway users with completion in Fall 2016.

Construction will require day and night single lane closures on Southeast 82nd Avenue, although there will be no lane closures during weekday commute times, 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.

Temporary pedestrian detours will be in place when sidewalks are closed for construction.

The improvements are planned for six Southeast 82nd Avenue intersections: East Burnside Street, Southeast Stark Street, Southeast Washington Street, Southeast Yamhill Street, Southeast Mill Street and Southeast Division Street.

Five of these intersections rank among the top five percent of high-crash sites in the region.

Improvements at all six intersections will include:

  • Replacing outdated traffic signals with modern equipment.
  • Adding sidewalk curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
  • Installing new lighting and larger, more reflective street signs to improve visibility.

Three locations on Southeast 82nd Avenue will also see enhanced pedestrian crossings: 82nd Avenue, Ash Street, Salmon Street and north of Division Street near Portland Community College.

The three enhanced pedestrian crossings will include new signs and pedestrian refuge islands between the north and southbound lanes on Southeast 82nd Avenue. At the crossing north of Division Street, rapid flash beacons, marked crosswalk and sidewalk/bus stop improvements will also be added.

Travelers should expect delays during construction. Real-time traffic details can be found at www.TripCheck.com.

TriMet bus stops may be impacted during construction. Information on schedule and bus stop location changes is available from TriMet at TriMet.org or by calling 503-238-7433.
