ODOT Warns of Potentially Heavy Snowfall

Winter Storm may affect early holiday travel

BEND – Motorists anticipating holiday travel through Central Oregon or across the Cascade Mountain passes are advised that a winter storm warning is in effect for these areas.

Light snow is expected to begin falling on Tuesday afternoon, followed by periods of heavy snowfall through Wednesday and possibly into Thursday.

This is likely to affect pre-Christmas travel plans for many drivers.

The following forecast is in effect for Central Oregon:

La Pine: possible 11”-12” of snow

Sunriver: possible 9”-10” of snow

Bend: possible 6”-7” of snow

Redmond: possible 2”-3” of snow

Prineville: possible 2”- 3” of snow

Madras: possible 2” of snow.

Local mountain passes may experience multiple feet of snowfall.

ODOT recommends the following safety precautions:

Be ready to use your chains. Be patient. Go slow.

Keep fuel tank full.

Carry emergency supplies (water, food, warm clothes, flashlight, etc.)

Turn off cruise control

Increase the following distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

Keep cell phone charged up (but don’t use it while driving)
