New off-ramp at Brookwood Parkway

opens at 5 a.m. Monday

The new loop off-ramp from westbound U.S. 26 to southbound Brookwood Parkway will open at 5 a.m. Monday Oct. 19.

The new ramp is a major milestone in the U.S. 26 Brookwood/Helvetia Exchange project, which will improve safety and traffic flow in the busy Washington County high tech corridor.

In addition, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, the existing off-ramp from the westbound highway will close for up to a week during realignment into a ramp to northbound Helvetia Road only. During the closure, signs will direct travelers to the Jackson School Road interchange.

The new loop ramp is the centerpiece to reconstruction of the interchange, which has become increasingly important along the Sunset Highway. Other project elements include widening the overcrossing to accommodate addition lanes, adding sidewalks and bike lanes and extending the northbound right turn lane to the eastbound highway.

The interchange serves as an entry point to Washington County’s high tech companies, one of the most important employment centers in the region and in the state.

It sees heavy traffic from westbound U.S. 26 to southbound Brookwood Parkway in the morning commute and heavy northbound traffic on Brookwood Parkway to eastbound U.S. 26 during the afternoon peak.

Approximately 850 nearby acres have been designated as industrial land and are projected to one day be home to thousands of new jobs.

The road crossing U.S. 26 is Brookwood Parkway to the south and Helvetia Road to the north.
