I-5 closed in both directions Friday night between Fremont and Marquam bridges for sign and paving work

Interstate 5 will be closed in both directions Friday night between the Fremont and Marquam bridges for ODOT’s ongoing freeway sign replacement and paving project.

The closure will be in place 10 p.m. Friday Sept. 25 until 7 a.m. Saturday Sept. 26.

The first lane closures will begin at 8 p.m., on-ramps will close at 9 p.m. and all lanes on I-5 will close at 10 p.m. All lanes and ramps will re-open by 7 a.m. Saturday Sept. 26.

The following northbound and southbound on-ramps will close at 9 p.m.

  • Westbound I-84 to southbound I-5.
  • North Greeley Avenue to southbound I-5.
  • The Rose Quarter on-ramp, Northeast Wheeler Avenue, to southbound I-5.
  • Southbound I-405 to northbound I-5.
  • Southwest Macadam Avenue to northbound I-5.
  • Southwest Broadway to southbound I-405 will be closed to northbound I-5 but open to southbound I-5.
  • Southwest 5th Avenue to southbound I-405.
  • Southwest Montgomery Street to southbound I-405 will be closed to northbound I-5 but open to Southwest 6th Avenue and to southbound I-5.

Traffic will be detoured in both directions onto I-405, the Fremont Bridge, while the ramp to eastbound I-84 will remain open. Westbound traffic from I-84 will be closed to southbound I-5, but will remain open for northbound I-5.

The I-5 Sign Replacement and Paving Project is replacing more than 300 green freeway signs from Southwest Corbett Avenue to North Lombard Street and repaving approximately seven miles of I-5 between Southwest Capitol Highway and the Marquam Bridge.

Many of the signs have lost their reflective properties over the years and will be upgraded to meet federal standards with more reflective materials.
