Paving begins on South Bypass project, Corvallis

CORVALLIS— The OR 34/US 20: South Bypass to Riverside Drive project is reaching a significant milestone beginning tonight as a contractor for ODOT grinds and paves OR 34 from just west of Peoria Road to the Van Buren and Harrison Street bridges.

The work will be conducted at night, between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. Travelers should be prepared to use downtown Corvallis as an alternate route during several phases of the paving.

On Monday night, the westbound right lane will be paved. Traffic impacts will include a single lane restriction for westbound travelers. As paving reaches the Bypass intersection, the traffic signals will be turned off and traffic will be controlled by flaggers.

On Tuesday night, the westbound left lane will be paved. Once again, a single lane restriction will occur. As paving reaches the Bypass intersection, travelers will not be allowed to turn south onto the Bypass. Flaggers will direct westbound traffic into downtown Corvallis as an alternate route.

On Wednesday and Thursday nights, paving will occur in the eastbound lanes. Once again, when paving at the Bypass intersection occurs, there will be no westbound to southbound turn movement allowed.   In addition, the Bypass traffic making the northbound to eastbound turning movement will experience extended delays to allow pavement to cure. Travelers are advised to use a downtown route for eastbound travel or be prepared for 40 minute holds.

Temporary striping will be applied to the new asphalt that will match the final lane configuration. However, the traffic will remain in the current, temporary configuration until the signal poles are installed and the permanent signals are placed.

Beginning next week, the South Bypass portion of the roadway will be paved. Similar lane restrictions and alternate routes will be necessary.

Avoid distractions. Respect the zone.

Travelers should be alert for orange cones near the work zone, it’s the cue to reduce speed and drive with caution through the construction areas.

  • Work zone crashes are often more severe than other types of crashes.
  • Most work zone crashes are caused by drivers not paying attention.
  • Speeding - or driving too fast for conditions - is the second leading cause of work zone crashes.
  • More than 40% of work zone crashes happen in the transition zone prior to the work area.
  • Drivers and passengers are more likely to be injured or killed than on-site workers.
  • Fines in work zones are double 24/7 whether workers are present or not.
