May 7 open house will look at widening plans

for U.S. 26 in Hillsboro

ODOT, the City of Hillsboro and Washington County will host an open house in Hillsboro on Thursday May 7 to discuss to widen U.S. 26 between Northwest Cornelius Pass Road and 185th Avenue.

The open house is set for 5 to 7 p.m. at Liberty High School, 21945 N.W. Wagon Way in Hillsboro. Project team members will be available to answer questions.

The stretch of the Sunset Highway has reached its vehicle capacity. Traffic demands will increase as the population and employment in Washington County continue to grow and without improvements, congestion and crashes are expected to increase.

The purpose of this project is to increase capacity, improve traffic safety and relieve congestion in this stretch of U.S. 26, which now has two lanes in each direction. Once complete, there will be three lanes in each direction of U.S. 26, from Cornelius Pass Road into downtown Portland.

Project elements include:

  • Widening U.S. 26 to three lanes in each direction between Cornelius Pass Road and 185th Avenue. The majority of the widening will occur to the inside of the highway, in the highway median. Highway shoulders also will be widened
  • Replacing the two Rock Creek bridges with one bridge. This work will take place over the Rock Creek Trail. More information about trail impacts and detours will be shared as design work progresses.
  • Improving the north side of the U.S. 26/Cornelius Pass Road interchange. Washington County is making improvements to Cornelius Pass Road and ramps on the south side of the interchange in a separate project. More information can be found at wc-roads.com.
  • A sound wall has been recommended on the north side of U.S. 26. Noise specialists will be at the open house to review this recommendation.

Washington County staff will also attend the open house to review pans for widening Cornelius Pass Road from Cornell Road to U.S. 26. For more information on the project visit http://www.co.washington.or.us/LUT/TransportationProjects/cornelius-pass-cornell-to-hwy-26.cfm
