We understand that many people are concerned about how the federal government shutdown could affect their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP food benefits. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) continues to carefully monitor impacts to SNAP and all ODHS benefits and services.
Right now, October SNAP benefits have not been impacted. People received their October benefits as usual, and anyone newly approved during October will also get their full benefits. ODHS received a memo from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that November benefits will be disrupted if a federal shutdown continues. ODHS is currently working to assess any impact to November benefits for Oregonians.
What’s at risk: SNAP food benefits go to 757,000 people in Oregon every month — roughly one in six residents. Approximately 210,000 of these SNAP recipients are children and 130,000 are adults ages 65 and older. The food benefits people receive are 100 percent funded by the federal government.
Who is responsible: SNAP is fully funded by USDA. The current uncertainty is due to a lapse in federal funding, which can only be resolved by Congress and President Trump reaching an agreement.
How we’ll keep you informed: ODHS will share updates as soon as we receive information from the USDA.
