On Friday, President Joe Biden delivered a formal apology at the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, acknowledging the painful legacy of the federal Indian boarding school system, which forcibly removed Indigenous children from their families for over 150 years.
At the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS), we have supported our Office of Tribal Affairs in their important work to honor and remember those children, as well as the survivors of this era. The observance of Orange Shirt Day has emerged as a vital initiative, fostering conversations centered on truth, honesty, and reconciliation regarding the profound impacts of this history on our Native employees and Tribal partners throughout Oregon.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) is seeking passionate individuals to help shape an innovative pilot program that will make a difference in the lives of people in Oregon. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) will allow eligible individuals to use their Oregon EBT card to purchase prepared meals from participating restaurants and retailers.
This program, launching in select areas of Oregon, is designed to serve three key groups who get SNAP:
· People aged 60 and over
· People with disabilities
· People experiencing homelessness
We are inviting current and former SNAP recipients, individuals with experience in food insecurity, the restaurant or grocery industries, and those who understand the challenges people in these groups face with access to hot meals.
By joining the task force, you’ll play a pivotal role in guiding how this program will be rolled out, making an impact on people who need it most. Visit the SNAP RMP webpage — available in English and Spanish — and apply today. Your voice and experience will help bring this groundbreaking program to life. This pilot was made possible by Senate Bill 1585, passed by the 2024 Oregon Legislature.
Once the pilot launches in 2026, Oregon will be one of only 10 states offering this option through SNAP.
