Data show varying amounts paid for identical procedures, impact on payments from the pandemic
SALEM, Ore. - Oregon Health Authority (OHA) released an updated interactive dashboard that shows how much insurers paid hospitals for medical treatments since 2017.
The dashboard includes 120 procedure types, accounting for more than $1 billion paid to hospitals in 2021. Overall, it shows how much commercial insurers paid hospitals for common procedures, how many procedures were performed, trends in payments over time, and a hospital cost comparison.
As in past years, commercial insurers paid Oregon hospitals widely varying amounts for the same procedures, not only from hospital to hospital but within the same hospital as well. For example, insurers paid hospitals a wide range for outpatient combined mastectomy and breast reconstruction. The middle half of those payments ranged from about $15,000 to $45,000. Insurers made a median payment of nearly $9,000 to the lowest paid hospital and $44,000 to the highest paid.
The data also illustrate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The average payment for inpatient procedures had the highest growth between 2020 and 2021, a nearly 8% rise, after adjusting for inflation. This brought the inflation-adjusted cumulative increase from 2017 to 2021 to nearly 9%.
Invasive mechanical ventilation procedures accounted for the largest increase in number of inpatient procedures, going up 35% between 2020 and 2021 and the largest percent increase in median payment of all procedures, going up 40%. By contrast, the payments for pregnancy-related procedures, diagnostic testing, outpatient pathology and laboratory services decreased overall since 2017.
Nationwide, people in the United States spent more than $4 trillion on health care in 2021, an average of nearly $13,000 per person. Hospital care accounts for 31% of that spending or over $1 trillion. It is one of the fastest-growing sectors of health care nationally, increasing 4% in 2021, compared with 3% for overall health spending.
