It can be tricky — and scary — for parents of young children to know when to take a sick child to the hospital or emergency room. Dr. Beau Gilmore, M.D., pediatrician and chief informaticist at Mosaic Medical in central Oregon, shared tips for helping parents assess their child's cold or RSV symptoms. State health officials are asking people to take immediate, urgent action to protect children and ensure there are pediatric intensive care beds available in Oregon hospitals to treat any child or youth with a serious illness or injury. Oregon health officials expect respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases to peak after the Thanksgiving holiday, which will further strain pediatric hospital intensive care units in the Portland area that are already at their limit.
In response to Oregon’s acute shortage of pediatric intensive care beds, state health officials recommend that people:
- Stay home when sick.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with the inside of your elbow, or with a tissue that you immediately throw away after use.
- Clean and disinfect all high-touch surfaces, including doorknobs, faucets, chairs, countertops and tables.
- Regularly wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, especially after coughing or sneezing into a tissue.
- Get a flu shot and stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including new bivalent boosters. There is no vaccine for RSV.
- Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces.

A member of OSH’s Food and Nutrition Services team helps prepare turkeys for the annual Thanksgiving meal.
Tomorrow morning at 3 a.m., members of Oregon State Hospital’s (OSH) Food and Nutrition Services team will report to the kitchen. Even before the sun rises, the first order of business is making cinnamon rolls from scratch for the hospital’s annual Thanksgiving Day breakfast.
The breakfast is just the beginning of an annual holiday meal tradition that will continue throughout the day, as OSH staff work to make the day special for the nearly 700 patients and about 300 staff spending the holiday away from their loved ones.
The “recipe” for Thanksgiving dinner at OSH includes:
- 360 pounds of sliced turkey
- 900 slices of pie
- 240 pounds of mashed potatoes
- 130 servings of lentil mushroom patties (for non-turkey eaters)
- 140 pounds of green beans
- 120 pounds of cranberry sauce
- 56 pounds of bread and 42 pounds of celery and onion for the dressing
- 30 gallons of gravy
“I’m extremely grateful that I have the resources the hospital provides so we can serve a traditional meal,” said Kent Hunter, OSH Food and Nutrition Services manager. “I look forward to it every year, as do the patients who always mention how much they enjoy the special meal and appreciate my staff who serve them.”
