If the holidays are hard: Resources for emotional and mental health
The holiday season is a time of sharing, connecting, remembering and celebrating. For many people, the holidays have always been difficult. Here are some ways to support mental and emotional health as you prepare for the holidays.
-
Do what’s best for you and your family. Traditions may have changed, or you may be ready for traditions to change. The most important thing is to do what is best for you. Continuing to protect ourselves against COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses will make gatherings safer. Be sure to make plans that:
- Make you feel safe.
- Fit your time and budget.
- Don’t overextend and stress yourself.
-
Set realistic expectations and boundaries. You may feel more than the usual pressure to make the holidays perfect. Or you may still feel cautious and uncertain about how to celebrate. Don’t be afraid to talk through and set boundaries, whether it’s about topics to discuss at the dinner table or expectations for behavior, such as masking or how you celebrate. You can also say “no” when something is outside the boundaries you set.
-
Recognize and respect your feelings. When we ignore negative feelings, they don’t go away. Whether you are feeling anger, anxiety, stress, loneliness, grief or depression, naming and processing your feelings helps you take control of those feelings. Also take time to recognize and appreciate positive feelings, including gratitude.
-
Help yourself and others practice self-care. Remember to eat, drink water and get enough sleep; keep connected with the people you care about; stay active. Don't forget that setting boundaries and saying no are also important ways to take care of yourself..
-
Reach out if you need help. If you’re struggling, you can talk to supportive people in your life, such as friends or family. If you need someone to reach out to, there are many resources to support your mental and emotional well-being year-round.
