What: The Health Licensing Office (HLO) and Board of Electrologists and Body Art Practitioners (Board) are seeking participants for July 2022 Electrology Rules Advisory Committee for education, training, pathways to licensure and examinations. Read more about that here.
Background: Currently Oregon has approximately 82 licensed electrologists in Oregon which is not enough to meet the demand for clients seeking permanent hair removal services. Recently, many private insurance companies and the Oregon Health Plan began covering the cost of gender reassignment surgery. Gender reassignment surgery requires an individual have permanent hair removal done in a specific area. With less than 100 electrologists licensed in Oregon it is crucial that we get more individuals licensed to do this important work.
As of today, there are no electrology schools taking new students in Oregon which continues to limit the number of individuals who can get licensed in this state. To help resolve the lack of schools the HLO and Board are developing a training program which will allow trainees to gain their education and training under a supervisor, similar to an apprenticeship. Other rule areas such as of qualifications, licensing and examinations will be reviewed to ensure as many barriers as possible ae being removed to get individuals licensed.
Attendance and participation by individuals and communities likely to be affected by the rule changes is essential to the rulemaking process. Please be sure you can attend the RAC on July 25, 2022, before applying.
If you are interested in serving on the RAC, please complete this interest form. All interest forms must be received by July 10, 2022, at 12 p.m.
For questions or further clarification, contact Samie Patnode at samie.patnode@dhsoha.state.or.us or at (503) 509-5592. For additional information on rules, visit the HLO website.
