Boarding schools and Tribal relations
Historically, the relationship between the U.S. Federal Government and American Indian/Alaska Native Tribes has been one of deception, mistreatment, and genocide. The intergenerational trauma stemming from this relationship still impacts the lives of Indigenous peoples within the United States.
Last week, a report was released detailing the dehumanizing treatment of Native children at U.S. Federal boarding schools—some of which were here in Oregon.
The leadership of ODHS and the Director of Tribal Affairs continues to improve relations with the Nine Federally Recognized Tribes of Oregon and out-of-state Tribal Nations. The ongoing relationship-building opens the door for us as an organization to acknowledge the role our agency has played in perpetuating harm against Tribal Nations for centuries.

Track COVID-19 cases by location
COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Oregon and across the country. While most experience mild symptoms, people with compromised immune systems may be more at risk for getting seriously ill from COVID-19. With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID Data Tracker, you can check what the transmission rate is by location. The good news is that we can use the proven safety measures to prevent serious illness: Keep up to date on your vaccinations, wear a mask indoors if transmission rates in your area are high, wash your hands frequently, sanitize high-touch areas and stay home if you are sick.

A message from ODHS leaders about the tragedies last weekend
There are no words to express our dismay and concern regarding the racially motivated attack that ended 10 lives in Buffalo, New York, and the deadly shooting at a Taiwanese church in Laguna Woods, California this past weekend.
Since there are no words—there must be action. As an agency, ODHS will continue to take action to become an anti-racist organization.
