Make a plan to vaccinate your student in time for school

If you are preparing to send your child back to the classroom this fall, you may have questions about vaccinating them against COVID-19. It's OK to have questions. Reliable sources of information include the CDC, the FDA and OHA’s website. For personal questions, your health care provider is your best source for you and your family. They have firsthand knowledge of the vaccine, how it works and what sort of side effects it may have.

With most of Oregon’s schools starting on September 7, this week is a good time to make a plan to vaccinate your child. The Pfizer vaccine is the only vaccine authorized for those 12 to 17 years of age. Vaccination with Pfizer requires a first shot, followed by a three-week wait for the second shot, then another two weeks before reaching full immunity - a total of five weeks.

Acquiring full immunity sooner will better protect your child from catching COVID-19, including the Delta variant.

Here are some things to know about vaccinating your child:

COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.
COVID-19 vaccines have been used under the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history, which includes studies in adolescents.

Your child can’t get COVID-19 from any COVID-19 vaccine, including the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
Your child may get a COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines at the same visit or without waiting 14 days between vaccines. This is great time to get kids up-to-date on their routine immunizations.

Oregon will require masks indoors for K-12 schools this upcoming school year

Today, in line with the CDC’s updated guidance, Governor Kate Brown directed OHA and the Oregon Department of Education to create a rule to require masks indoors for K-12 schools statewide for the upcoming school year. This is critical to ensure Oregon children can return to full-time in-person learning this fall with minimal disruptions. Because many children are not yet eligible to be vaccinated, masks are crucial to help keep our kids safe in the classroom.

Oregon reports 1,026 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases, 6 new deaths

We want to keep you informed about COVID-19 in Oregon. Data are provisional and change frequently.

• Samples for 315,396 tests have been reported positive.

• Samples for 5,373,943 tests have been reported negative.

Today we're reporting 1,026 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 as of 12:01 a.m. today, bringing the state total to 218,689. The new cases reported today are in the following counties: Baker (11), Benton (17), Clackamas (69), Clatsop (18), Columbia (5), Coos (20), Crook (7), Curry (11), Deschutes (36), Douglas (54), Gilliam (2), Grant (3), Harney (3), Hood River (4), Jackson (111), Jefferson (4), Josephine (35), Klamath (17), Lane (93), Lincoln (4), Linn (46), Malheur (7), Marion (66), Morrow (6), Multnomah (95), Polk (24), Sherman (5), Tillamook (8), Umatilla (110), Union (21), Wallowa (3), Wasco (27), Washington (60), Wheeler (4) and Yamhill (20).

There are six new COVID-19 related deaths in Oregon, raising the state’s death toll to 2,855. More information on COVID-19 related deaths are available here: oregon.gov/oha/erd/pages/covid-19-news.aspx

The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 across Oregon is 285, which is 11 more than yesterday. There are 84 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) beds, which is two fewer than yesterday.

The total number of patients in hospital beds may fluctuate between report times. The numbers do not reflect admissions per day, nor the length of hospital stay. Staffing limitations are not captured in this data and may further limit bed capacity.
