INTERTIDAL SURVEY SERIES: THE DOCTOR IS IN

star

One symptom of Sea Star Wasting Syndrome is a deflated looking appearance, like the sea star pictured above.

Check out our new summer series on all things intertidal research. This week we'll be diving into how to diagnose Sea Star Wasting Syndrome. Sea Star Wasting Syndrome was an epidemic that wiped out millions of sea stars along the Pacific Coast beginning in 2014. This mass die-off marked the largest marine animal disease event in recorded history.

The ODFW Marine Reserves Program conducts intertidal monitoring at Otter Rock and Cascade Head Marine Reserves. This research enables us to monitor and track emerging issues such as the effects of this major sea star epidemic.

WELCOME SUMMER SCHOLARS!

peep

Sea Grant Summer Scholars Madison Bristol (left) and Taylor Ely (center) get ready for survival suit training led by Ecological Project Leader, Dr. Lindsay Aylesworth (right).

Oregon Marine Reserves Program would like to welcome three Oregon Sea Grant Summer Scholars working with us for the summer. The Oregon Sea Grant Summer Scholar Program runs from June through August and places high caliber junior and senior undergraduate students from around the country in a variety of Oregon-based host organizations to provide students with hands-on experience under the mentorship of a career professional. Taylor Ely will be working with our ecological monitoring team and  Madison Bristol will be working with our human dimensions team. Happy to have them join us for the summer!

UPDATES FROM THE FIELD

hook and line surveys

In June, our volunteer anglers helped us complete our spring hook-and-line  surveys in the Cascade Head and Cape Perpetua Marine Reserves and their associated comparison areas. Ten days of surveys are scheduled for the fall.

SCUBA

Our volunteer divers worked hard this month to complete 31 scuba transects  and collect 22 underwater lander videos from the Cascade Head Marine Reserve and its comparison areas.

oceanography

Oceanographic instrumentation was deployed and the first month of data (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and flourescence) downloaded in collaboration with OSU at the Cascade Head Marine Reserve. Data collection will continue monthly through the summer.

seastar

We conducted a Facebook livestream event highlighting our intertidal sea star wasting surveys at Otter Rock Marine Reserve. These surveys will continue at Otter Rock and Cascade Head Marine Reserve over the summer.

UPDATES FROM OUR COLLABORATORS

pH

pH sensors were deployed at Redfish Rocks, Cape Perpetua, Otter Rock, Cascade Head, and Cape Falcon by PISCO scientists from OSU, with assistance from local community members.

Fish

Juvenile fish recruitment surveys (SMURFs) were conducted at Otter Rock and Redfish Rocks (by OSU, ODFW Marine Reserves Program, Oregon Coast Aquarium). These surveys will continue through the summer.
