This past Wednesday, the Library featured two programs with artists from Comunidad y Herencia Cultural. The event included a traditional leatherworking workshop and a history on Charreria, which is a traditional livestock herding practice. Presenters went on to share rope trick demonstrations and traditional dances.
The Library continues to highlight Mexican culture with the Charro and Escaramuza Attire Exhibition on display through August 7. The exhibit features handmade Charro and Escaramuza attire and highlights a tradition dating back more than 500 years. The exhibit is made possible by a collaboration between Comunidad y Herencia Cultural, Coos Bay Public Library, and is made possible in part with financial support from the Coos County Cultural Coalition.
The Coos Bay Public Library consistently provides educational, cultural, and just plain amazing activities each month. In June alone, the Library hosted 65 programs for all ages and welcomed 1,100 people in attendance. More exciting programming is on the horizon later this month. On July 20, the Library will be hosting the Eugene Taiko Drum Ensemble in Mingus Park. Work is also starting on a native plant mural. It will not only feature the plants and flowers of the area but also the names in both English and local Tribal languages.
I urge you to constantly check in with the Library to see what other offerings, beyond the extensive collection of books, they have to offer. The staff is always willing to help you find just what you need.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay

Facts About Public Right-of-Ways
Common questions the City of Coos Bay Public Works Department receives includes, “What is the right-of-way?” and “Why do I need a Public Works permit to do work in the right-of-way?”
The right-of-way is public property that includes any public thoroughfare such as a street, road, or alley. It also usually includes adjacent median, curbs, ditches and culverts, parkways and parkway trees, utility poles, sidewalks, and driveway aprons, which is the section of all driveways between the street curb and the property line. In many places underground utility lines are located throughout the right-of-way. The underground utilities include storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure, internet cable, natural gas, and power lines.
Obtaining a Public Works permit ensures that all new work conducted within the right-of-way meets all applicable regulations and codes and does not interfere with existing above or below ground infrastructure or pose a danger to the general public or the individuals performing the work. Permits also ensure that grass, landscaping, and road infrastructure are restored to the same or better conditions as before the work was performed. Lastly, the City uses permit data to update its records on what exists in the right-of-way to avoid unnecessary or unforeseen costs during emergencies and routine maintenance.
Should you have more questions about right-of-ways, please contact Public Works at 541-269-8918.

The City of Coos Bay is soliciting applications for volunteers to be part of the Project Management Team (PMT) for the planning effort for the Safe Routes to School (SRTS).
This year the City of Coos Bay, at the direction of the Parks Commission, City Council, and in partnership with the Coos Bay School District #9, applied for and received a Planning Grant for the SRTS for the following schools: Sunset Middle School, Destinations Academy and Marshfield Senior High School. The grant will focus on planning assistance which will analyze a two-mile radius around each of the schools to identify barriers and hazards that impact walking and rolling opportunities. It will also set goals for increasing the number of students choosing to walk and roll.
As a member of the PMT, you will provide valuable insights to the team and make a positive impact for the children and young adults who attend these schools. This is an 12-18-month commitment with at least 4-5 meetings and some site visits. City Requests Development Proposals
The City of Coos Bay is seeking development proposals for the former municipal fire station site at 150 South Fourth Street. Approximately 0.22-acres m/l of readily available land, ideally suited for Mixed-Use development in Oregon’s largest coastal city.
The property is intended to provide the community with a mix of mutually supporting retail, service, office, and residential uses. The property’s location within the Downtown Parking District means that off-street parking is not required for development. Multiple public parking lots are near the property and available for public use.
Economic development and revitalization are a primary goal of the City of Coos Bay. The City envisions a new development on the property that provides a mix of uses to further revitalize and enhance the economic vitality of the Downtown area. Development proposals for the property should complement the surrounding Downtown both functionally and aesthetically.
The City seeks Letters of Interest from interested development teams. City staff will review Letters of Interest to make a recommendation to the City of Coos Bay Urban Renewal Agency (URA). Presentations will be scheduled with top applicants and the URA. Selection of the preferred development proposal is anticipated thereafter.
