Community Celebrations and Festivals Shine All Summer Long
Summer is here and it shows! The weather has been perfectly warm and sunny with our customary coastal breeze making outdoor activities enjoyable. I am seeing more and more people out and about. There have been ball games at all the community fields, families in the park, and more people out walking in the community. It’s the perfect time to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful place and amongst such a robust community. I hope you take a moment to count your blessings, and when you are out, meet someone new!
We just enjoyed some festivities this week with firework displays on July 3 at the Mill Casino and July 4 near the Coos Bay Boardwalk, and the continuation of Fourth of July in the Park event (thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Coos Bay Downtown Association and the South Coast Running Club). In the coming weeks, we will see the return of the North Bend July Jubilee and the Coos County Fair. Mayor Engelke and her team have been hard at work bringing North Bend’s signature event back to life. This annual celebration has a rich history and has been missed.
The thing about festivals, and Coos Bay is lucky to have both the BlackBerry Arts Festival and the Bay Area Fun Festival, is that they become a significant and vital piece of the fabric that weaves together a community. A healthy community knows how to come together in celebration. Spending time together in the outdoors, thinking about past celebrations, and seeing the generations change all lends to what makes our community vibrant and connected. Kudos to North Bend for seeing the value in reviving their community festival. Come show your support for this effort to bring back the July Jubilee by participating in one of the many planned events. Maybe consider catching the softball game which is a fun rivalry match between Coos Bay and North Bend on Sunday, July 14 at 11 a.m. at the Clyde Allen field. Batter Up!!
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay

Coos Bay Receives Oregon Heritage All-Star Community Designation
Coos Bay has been designated by the Oregon Heritage Commission as an “Oregon Heritage All-Star Community.” The commission created the All-Star program to recognize the strong efforts by communities to broadly preserve and develop heritage resources.
An All-Star designation requires that communities meet at least 15 of 24 criteria related to local heritage. These include heritage tourism efforts, historic preservation programs, photo and document archives, museums, historic cemeteries, historic downtowns and more.
“Coos Bay has a long and broad history,” said Katie Henry coordinator for the Oregon Heritage Commission. “The efforts of the city, tribes, museums, businesses, and community members in preserving and sharing local history contributes to the economy and livability of Coos Bay.”
A representative of the Oregon Heritage Commission will formally acknowledge the designation at the Coos Bay City Council work session on July 23, 2024, at 6 p.m.
Coos Bay Mayor Joe Benetti stated, “This designation is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our community in preserving Coos Bay’s rich heritage, we are honored to receive this recognition and are committed to continuing our efforts in celebrating and safeguarding our history for future generations.”
The city is required to maintain at least 15 of the criteria to maintain the Heritage All-Star status. Technical assistance will be provided to Coos Bay to maintain, sustain and expand the heritage offerings and facilities. The city joins seven other All-Star communities including Albany, Astoria, Bend, Cottage Grove, Oregon City, Roseburg, and Salem.
The Oregon Heritage Commission works to secure, sustain and enhance Oregon’s heritage. The Commission sponsors heritage initiatives that educate the public about the value of heritage and celebrate the state’s diversity.
The Oregon Heritage Commission consists of nine members appointed by the governor and nine agency advisors. Members are chosen from state agencies and statewide organizations, and represent a diverse geographical and heritage background.
Assistance is available for communities seeking to acquire Heritage All-Star Community status. Oregon Heritage of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, which houses the Oregon Heritage Commission, offers technical support, workshops, grants and other resources for all heritage projects in the state. This year the City of Coos Bay, at the direction of the Parks Commission, City Council, and in partnership with the Coos Bay School District #9, applied for and received a Planning Grant for the SRTS for the following schools: Sunset Middle School, Destinations Academy and Marshfield Senior High School. City Requests Development Proposals
The City of Coos Bay is seeking development proposals for the former municipal fire station site at 150 South Fourth Street. Approximately 0.22-acres m/l of readily available land, ideally suited for Mixed-Use development in Oregon’s largest coastal city.
The property is intended to provide the community with a mix of mutually supporting retail, service, office, and residential uses. The property’s location within the Downtown Parking District means that off-street parking is not required for development. Multiple public parking lots are near the property and available for public use.
Economic development and revitalization are a primary goal of the City of Coos Bay. The City envisions a new development on the property that provides a mix of uses to further revitalize and enhance the economic vitality of the Downtown area. Development proposals for the property should complement the surrounding Downtown both functionally and aesthetically.
The City seeks Letters of Interest from interested development teams. City staff will review Letters of Interest to make a recommendation to the City of Coos Bay Urban Renewal Agency (URA). Presentations will be scheduled with top applicants and the URA. Selection of the preferred development proposal is anticipated thereafter.
