Spring is in the air and we are waking up to more sunny days than rainy days. This is a time for spring cleaning and preparing for the busy summer months. Spring cleaning throughout the City is important as we all spend more time outdoors and we have the opportunity to showcase the beauty of our community and surrounding natural environment. Many in our community have started this work with pulling down the cobwebs, cleaning gutters, even adding some fresh paint. There are several opportunities coming up where you can lend a helping hand towards a similar effort:
-
Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Bay Area Brigade focused on cleaning up areas surrounding Hwy 101 in Coos Bay and North Bend. This event is planned for May 4, 2024, starting at the North Bend Fire Department at 8:30 a.m. The event ends at the Coos Bay Fire Department at 11:30 a.m. where the winning team (Marshfield, North Bend, Southwestern) is awarded the coveted trophy.
- Oregon’s Bay Area Beautification (OBAB) holds their Second Saturday Cleanup each month at various locations throughout the Coos Bay/North Bend area. On May 11, 2024 they will meet at the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery to clean up the grounds in preparation of Memorial Day. For more information contact OBAB.
- United Way holds their annual Day of Caring in Coos County on June 8, 2024. This event gathers volunteers to help those in our community to get their yards in shape, who are otherwise unable to complete this work on their own. Check-in is at the Coos Bay Fire Department and the event runs from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. For more information and to sign up contact the local United Way office at 541-267-5202 or info@unitedwayswo.org.
Additionally, this is the time that area businesses can spruce up their ‘front door,’ including surrounding sidewalk areas, helping to get ready for the summer foot traffic. As you likely know, property owners are responsible for sidewalks that adjoin their property, allowing for everyone to pitch in on the clean-up effort.
And if you are feeling extra energetic, after tackling projects at your home and participating in one or all of the events above, check out Adopt One Block. This organization supports individuals in their effort to take care of their communities. Registration provides an opportunity to select your block for adoption, commit to a year of regular weekly cleanups, and the organization even provides supplies to complete this work.
The Coos Bay Farmers Market is nearly upon us and summer festivities will follow shortly, including Coos Bay’s 150th Birthday. Get out and enjoy the sunshine as spring unfolds into summer.

On April 17, 2024, the Oregon Heritage Commission designated the City of Coos Bay an Oregon Heritage All-Star Community. Coos Bay is now one of eight communities across the State of Oregon with this special designation.
The Oregon Heritage All-Star program is a way to recognize communities that make the most of their historic resources. By safeguarding important elements of the past, communities advance both “quality of life” and economic objectives while enhancing their unique community character. To be considered for Oregon Heritage All-Star designation, a community must meet at least 15 of 24 criteria outlined in the guidelines; Coos Bay satisfied 17 criteria. With this designation, the City will receive a certificate, signage, a logo, recognition on the Travel Oregon website, and technical support to maintain the designation.
Thank you to all the Community Heritage partners who came together to make this a successful designation!!

On February 16, 2024, a vessel hit the Eastside Boat Ramp and removed one pile, potentially compromised the remaining two piles, and damaged all of the floats. For safety purposes City staff removed the floats and unfortunately had to close the boat ramp. Because this is considered a maritime accident, there are Coast Guard and federal investigations pending, not to mention insurance investigations. Furthermore, underwater inspections are required which further complicates and delays this investigation process. The City is aware of how important and widely used this boat ramp facility is to Coos Bay’s sport anglers and the tourists who come from far and wide to fish the local bay and rivers.
What does this all mean? The short answer is the City has no forecast as to when the floats will be reinstalled. The longer answer is that the City’s boat ramps are funded through grants from the Oregon State Marine Board (OSMB), which in turn is funded by fees through fish and game licenses. OSMB funded the installation and construction of new floats at Eastside just one year ago with the intent of the floats having a 20-year life expectancy. Staff are working with OSMB to investigate funding opportunities for both design and construction. There will be more to follow up on this issue as coordination with OSMB progresses. However, it is very likely the boat ramps will not be in place for the 2024 salmon season.
The exhibit below identifies the other boat ramp facilities in the area that may be of use to anglers, in the interim, until the Eastside Boat Ramp is opened back up. It is recommended that if you are not familiar with a boat ramp, you visit the site prior to launching your boat to ensure it can accommodate your needs.
*Reopening for the Empire Boat Launch is planned for the end of April.
